Tenth grade carries real weight in Florida: the tenth-grade ELA assessment is a graduation requirement for public school students (or a qualifying concordant SAT/ACT score), which makes this a pivotal year for reading and writing skills specifically.
English (Language Arts)
English II typically builds on 9th grade with:
- More complex literary analysis, including thematic connections across texts and time periods
- Persuasive and research-based writing at a more independent level
- Deeper rhetorical and structural analysis of both fiction and nonfiction
Passing the 10th-grade ELA assessment (or an equivalent qualifying score) is required for a standard Florida diploma, so this is a good year to be honest with yourself about whether reading and writing feel solid. This is not required for Ascend STEM Academy students.
Math
Most 10th graders take Geometry, which Florida recommends completing by the end of this year. Geometry has its own EOC exam and covers proofs, congruence, similarity, right triangles, and coordinate geometry.
Science
Students often take Chemistry or continue with Physical Science, building toward the three science credits (with two lab components) required for a public school graduation.
Social Studies & Other Requirements
World History is commonly completed in ninth or tenth grade. This is also a common year for students to start thinking about elective sequencing — world languages, career/technical electives, or early AP/dual enrollment options.

- Are they comfortable with geometric proofs and properties of shapes?
- Could they pass a 10th-grade-level reading comprehension test today?
- Do they have a rough sense of their four-year course plan and what’s left?
A Note for Homeschooling Families
Even though homeschoolers aren’t required to take Florida’s state assessments, the 10th-grade ELA benchmark is a genuinely useful gut-check — if reading comprehension feels shaky here, it’s worth addressing before junior year, when reading demands increase again with U.S. History and AP-level coursework.
