Seventh grade is Florida’s Civics year — a state-mandated course that ends with an End-of-Course (EOC) exam public school students must take. Homeschoolers don’t have to take the EOC, but the content is genuinely useful, and it’s worth covering regardless of your umbrella school’s requirements.
Reading & Language Arts
- Analyze rhetoric, tone, and bias across historical speeches, informational text, and literature
- Write argumentative essays that anticipate and address counterarguments
- Compare texts from different time periods and cultural contexts
- Refine research and citation skills
Math
Seventh grade math typically covers:
- Proportional relationships and percentages, including simple/compound interest and tax/tip problems
- Operations with rational numbers (positive and negative)
- Expressions, equations, and inequalities
- Geometry — angle relationships, circles, and area/volume of more complex figures
- Probability and statistical sampling
Students on the accelerated track often take Algebra 1 (sometimes for high school credit) in 7th grade.
Science & Social Studies
Social studies is Florida’s official M/J Civics course — the structure of government, the Constitution, rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and how laws are made at local, state, and federal levels. Science typically continues comprehensive/life science with more emphasis on the scientific method and lab work.
Signs Your Seventh Grader Is On Track
- Can they explain the three branches of government and what checks and balances mean?
- Can they solve a percentage problem involving discount, tax, or interest?
- Can they identify bias or a persuasive technique in a piece of writing?
A Note for Homeschooling Families
Civics is one subject where “just read the textbook” tends to fall flat — mock trials, local government visits, and current-events discussions make the material stick far better. It’s also a subject that pairs naturally with real conversations happening in your household anyway.
