Sixth grade marks the start of middle school in most Florida districts, and with it comes a real shift: subjects get taught more independently of each other, and students are expected to manage more of their own workload. Here’s what Florida expects.
Reading & Language Arts
- Analyze literary and informational texts for theme, structure, and author’s craft
- Write structured essays with a clear claim and evidence-based support
- Begin more formal grammar, vocabulary, and rhetoric instruction — Florida’s B.E.S.T. standards introduce debate and rhetoric skills starting in 6th grade, earlier than under previous standards
- Conduct research using credible sources and proper citation basics
Math
Sixth grade math generally covers:
- Ratios and proportional reasoning
- Operations with all forms of fractions and decimals, including division of fractions
- Introduction to expressions, equations, and basic algebraic thinking
- Statistics — mean, median, mode, and range
- Area, surface area, and volume of more complex shapes
Some students take standard 6th grade math; others who are ahead may move into an accelerated track that leads to Algebra 1 by 7th or 8th grade.
Science & Social Studies
Social studies in 6th grade is Florida’s official M/J World History course, covering the earliest civilizations through the ancient and classical civilizations of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Science moves into more structured, lab-based instruction — often physical science or an integrated comprehensive science course.
Signs Your Sixth Grader Is On Track
- Can they write a multi-paragraph essay that argues a specific claim?
- Are they comfortable with fractions, decimals, and percentages as related concepts?
- Can they manage a multi-step assignment somewhat independently?
