Third grade is a pivot year in Florida — it’s the first year public school students take the state’s FAST reading assessment, and it’s the year tied to Florida’s well-known “3rd grade reading guarantee,” which can affect promotion to 4th grade for students reading well below grade level. Homeschoolers aren’t subject to public-school promotion rules, but the underlying benchmarks are still useful to know.
Reading & Language Arts
- Read and comprehend grade-level chapter books independently
- Identify theme, compare and contrast characters or texts, and summarize longer passages
- Use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words
- Write organized paragraphs and short essays with a clear topic sentence and supporting details
- Begin using reference materials (dictionaries, glossaries) independently
Math
- Multiply and divide within 100 and understand the relationship between the two operations
- Understand fractions as numbers, including comparing simple fractions
- Solve two-step word problems using all four operations
- Understand area and perimeter of rectangles
- Read and interpret bar graphs and picture graphs
Science & Social Studies
Third grade science covers life cycles, ecosystems, and basic physical science (forces and motion). Florida’s official 3rd grade social studies course, “The United States Regions and Its Neighbors,” has students study the physical and cultural characteristics of U.S. regions along with Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean — building geography and map skills along the way.
Signs Your Third Grader Is On Track
- Can they read a chapter book series independently and tell you what’s happening?
- Do they know their multiplication facts up to 10, or are they working steadily toward them?
- Can they explain what a fraction like 3/4 actually means?

Because third grade is when Florida starts formal state testing, it’s a common year for homeschool parents to want an outside benchmark — not because you have to, but because it’s reassuring.
